IRONMAN & IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns – Queensland
Best for breathtaking scenery, a challenging bike ride and an unforgettable race atmosphere.
Cairns is one of those events that belongs on every triathlete's bucket list.
Set between two World Heritage-listed natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics rainforest, Cairns offers arguably one of the most spectacular bike courses in Australian triathlon.
The swim begins at beautiful Palm Cove, where warm tropical waters and palm-fringed beaches create a memorable start. However, don't be fooled by the postcard-perfect location. Palm Cove is an open-water ocean swim, and conditions can become challenging when the southeasterly trade winds pick up.
Then comes the bike course!
Riding along the Captain Cook Highway towards Port Douglas is nothing short of spectacular. The coastline winds around rainforest-covered mountains with sweeping views across the Coral Sea. But this is certainly not a flat, easy course.
Rolling hills, undulating coastal roads and the potential for coastal headwinds make Cairns a genuine test of cycling strength and endurance.
The reward? Some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever experience while racing.
What truly makes Cairns special, however, is the local support. From the swim start at Palm Cove to the energetic Cairns Esplanade, the community gets behind the athletes. The run course is particularly memorable, with locals, families, volunteers and supporters cheering athletes towards the finish line.
For visiting athletes, Cairns is also a fantastic holiday destination, offering the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, waterfalls, beautiful beaches and tropical adventures.
TriMotivate verdict:
Cairns is our pick for athletes wanting a challenging but rewarding race combined with world-class scenery, tropical weather and incredible local support.
2. IRONMAN & IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia – Busselton
Best for fast racing, smooth and flat cycling, and personal best opportunities.
If you're chasing a fast IRONMAN or 70.3 time, Busselton should be very high on your list.
Western Australia has built a reputation for offering one of the fastest IRONMAN race experiences in the region.
And it's easy to understand why.
The bike course is exceptionally flat, with long stretches of road where athletes can maintain a consistent rhythm, settle into an aerodynamic position and produce steady power.
With minimal climbing and generally favourable road conditions, the Busselton course is ideal for athletes who have trained specifically for sustained cycling speed.
For those who love the challenge of keeping their power output consistent over long distances, this is your course.
The swim takes place in Geographe Bay, near the iconic Busselton Jetty. The bay is generally more protected than an exposed ocean beach, although changing winds can still create surface chop.
The run course is equally appealing, with a flat coastal setting and fantastic opportunities for spectators to cheer athletes along.
Busselton also offers an exceptional holiday experience. The Margaret River region is renowned for its wineries, beautiful beaches, local produce and relaxed coastal lifestyle.
There is, however, one important consideration. Flat doesn't always mean easy. Western Australia's heat and afternoon winds can make maintaining pace a challenge, particularly over the full IRONMAN distance.
TriMotivate verdict:
Busselton is our number-one choice for athletes targeting a fast race and a potential personal best. The flat course and opportunities for consistent cycling make it particularly attractive to strong time-trial riders.
3. IRONMAN & IRONMAN 70.3 New Zealand – Taupō
Best for an iconic racing experience, beautiful freshwater swimming and outstanding community support.
There is something special about racing in Taupō.
New Zealand has an incredible triathlon culture, and the local community embraces IRONMAN weekend with enthusiasm.
The swim takes place in the clear freshwater of Lake Taupō, providing a beautiful alternative to ocean swimming. While the lake is generally appealing for swimmers, it is a large body of water and can still experience challenging chop in windy conditions.
The bike course features rolling terrain, picturesque countryside and sections that require smart pacing rather than simply holding the highest possible power.
The run alongside the lake is a highlight, with enthusiastic spectators and a wonderful finish-line atmosphere.
Away from racing, Taupō offers geothermal attractions, stunning landscapes, adventure activities and plenty of opportunities for athletes and their families to explore.
TriMotivate verdict:
Taupō is one of the best all-round IRONMAN destinations, particularly for athletes who value tradition, natural scenery and a supportive racing community.
4. IRONMAN Australia & IRONMAN 70.3 Port Macquarie – NSW
Best for athletes who enjoy challenging terrain and a traditional IRONMAN atmosphere.
Port Macquarie is a favourite among Australian endurance athletes, and for good reason.
This coastal destination offers the atmosphere of a town that genuinely embraces long-course triathlon.
The swim takes place in the Hastings River system, providing a relatively protected environment compared with an open-ocean swim, although tidal currents and conditions still require consideration.
The bike course is where Port Macquarie can really test athletes.
Its undulating terrain and notable climbs demand strength, good gearing choices and careful pacing. Rather than relying purely on aerodynamics, successful athletes need to manage repeated changes in effort.
The beautiful coastal setting, relaxed holiday atmosphere and enthusiastic local community make Port Macquarie a memorable destination.
TriMotivate verdict:
An excellent choice for athletes wanting a challenging course and a community-driven race experience. Particularly rewarding for athletes who enjoy hills and tactical cycling.
5. IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast – Queensland
Best for a beach holiday, fast riding and an energetic coastal race experience.
The Sunshine Coast delivers exactly what the name suggests – beautiful beaches, a relaxed atmosphere and a destination that is easy to enjoy before and after race day.
Starting at Mooloolaba, athletes tackle an ocean swim that can range from relatively calm conditions to challenging surf and swell.
The bike course is predominantly flat and fast, offering excellent opportunities to build momentum and maintain a consistent pace.
The run along the coastal esplanade provides great spectator access and plenty of energy when athletes need it most.
One of the biggest attractions is the accessibility of the course for athletes of different abilities.
TriMotivate verdict:
A fantastic option for first-time 70.3 athletes or experienced competitors looking for a faster course in a beautiful Queensland holiday destination. Ocean swim confidence is important.
6. IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong – Victoria
Best for a balanced race, protected swimming and a great weekend away.
Geelong is an underrated gem on the Australian 70.3 calendar.
The swim in Corio Bay is generally protected, making it attractive for athletes who prefer calmer water.
The bike course combines flatter sections with rolling terrain, offering enough variety to keep athletes working without the sustained difficulty associated with more demanding courses.
The waterfront run and accessible spectator areas create an enjoyable race-day atmosphere.
Geelong is also the gateway to the Bellarine Peninsula and Great Ocean Road, making it a great place to extend your race weekend into a holiday.
TriMotivate verdict:
A well-balanced event that suits a wide range of abilities, including athletes tackling their first 70.3.
7. IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney – NSW
Best for athletes wanting a controlled swim environment and a race focused on performance.
Western Sydney is a strong choice for athletes who prefer a straightforward race environment without the uncertainties of ocean surf.
The swim takes place in the freshwater lake at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, providing a relatively controlled and sheltered venue.
The bike course offers opportunities for fast riding, although wind and sections of undulating terrain should not be underestimated.
With a course centred around the Penrith area and views towards the Blue Mountains, the race offers a combination of urban accessibility and natural scenery.
The run and finish-line precinct make it easy for friends and family to support athletes.
TriMotivate verdict:
A particularly appealing race for athletes who prefer freshwater swimming and want to concentrate on executing a strong, consistent race.
8. IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne – St Kilda, Victoria
Best for athletes wanting a city experience with fast racing potential.
Melbourne offers a completely different IRONMAN 70.3 experience.
Rather than tropical rainforest or remote coastline, this event combines an iconic Australian city with a flat, fast racing environment.
The swim takes place in Port Phillip Bay near St Kilda. While generally more sheltered than an open-ocean beach, the bay is still susceptible to wind-driven chop.
The bike course offers fast riding potential, although exposed sections can make wind an important factor.
The flat waterfront run gives athletes a chance to maintain consistent pacing while enjoying views of the city and coastline.
For those who love combining sport with a city break, Melbourne is hard to beat.
TriMotivate verdict:
A great choice for athletes chasing a strong 70.3 performance while enjoying everything Melbourne has to offer.
